In the "Kitchen of Meaning" by Roland Barthes, the concept of semiology is openly articulated through the text; ultimately explicating the significance of symbols within our daily rituals. These signs would as a result, grant us insights upon certain subjects; enabling a deeper perspective. In addition, the author strives to limn the ambiguity of symbols being that they can be interpreted in various ways.

In all honesty, after reading the piece, I was rather confused. The text left me wondering if it was trying to illustrate the myriad differences between symbols, or that signs are bound to inhibit multiple definitions. Despite the confusion, Barthes’ statement regarding the lack of simplicity within symbols would prove to be agreeable as signs are ultimately dictated through the various perspectives of people.

Learning to Read and Write by Fredrick Douglass

After reading the excerpt of Fredrick Douglass, one section ultimately stood out as Douglass thoroughly explicates his regret upon receiving knowledge. He limns of his newly acquisition as being a "curse rather than a blessing." In a sense, I believe this is partially true as in my opinion, knowledge constitutes itself as a double-edged blade; ultimately bestowing truth and wisdom while eradicating ignorance, and as they, ignorance is bliss.

Casa: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood by Judith Ortiz Cofer

Cofer's memoir regarding her childhood proved to be quite interesting as she as limns of her matriarchal influences within her upbringing. As hinted from the text, her character has been developed around the guidance of Mama and the other women; ultimately acquiring valuable knowledge in regards to both men and life. As a result, through the teachings of the women, Cofer would learn the mistakes they've made through their lives and not repeat them; through the past, Cofer would be bestowed a brighter future.

Mother Tongue by Amy Tan

Tan’s experience with her mother in regards to the English language largely mirrors that of my own; in essence, my parents also convey a form of butchered English. This type of “broken” language limned by Tan has ultimately summoned forth situations akin to that of the text within my life; mainly in terms of substituting for my parents or in some cases, translating. In addition, I do believe my parents’ usage of English has ultimately affected me; much like in Tan in regards to ways in which I analyze language.

Confessions Of A Recovering Misogynist by Kevin Powell

After reading the piece, Powell’s point regarding the influence of society proves to be valid; as people generally operate within realms of social expectations. This is evidenced through Powell’s struggles with the opposite sex as he was brought up under the comprehension of female inferiority; Powell was ultimately expected to treat women harshly, hence his patriarchal behaviors. In addition, Powell’s male chauvinism also acts toward his substantiation of power being Powell’s state of instability within society.
